Joint letter from Councillor Mike Whitby, Chair, City Region and Leader, Birmingham City Council and Councillor Ken Taylor, Leader, Coventry City Council.

Cllr Mike Whitby The City Region is a voluntary partnership comprised of 7 urban local authorities, the West Midlands Regional Assembly, Advantage West Midlands, the West Midlands Learning and Skills Council and the Business Community.

We are a significant driver behind the West Midlands economy; with an output of around £46 billion (some 55% of the West Midlands GVA) and a population of around 2,762,000 (over 50% of the West Midlands total).

We believe that through true partnership working, on a co-ordinated and cross-border basis, we can increase our prosperity, competitiveness and quality of life to a far greater extent than if acting individually.

The City Region is the natural level at which we can make some key strategic decisions that will enrich not only the sub-region, but the whole of the West Midlands as well. I firmly believe that a strong City Region can be a true driver behind the national economy, and across the country successful city regions will be essential if we are to continue to elevate the status of our cities.

Mike Whitby
Chairman of the City Region Board and Leader of Birmingham City Council
