What is a 'City Region'?
Communities and Local Government (CLG) define a 'City Region' as ‘…the economic footprint of a city and is defined by the ways that people live their lives and the economic relationship between a city and its surrounding area (including smaller cities and towns and rural hinterlands located there)’ (http://www.communities.gov.uk/citiesandregions/).
A city's economic, cultural and social success depends heavily on its connections with neighbouring towns, cities and surrounding rural areas. The City Region takes into account functional economic markets such as travel to work areas and labour markets. Therefore City Regions have more flexible and changing boundaries in comparison to its administrative boundaries.
